Hey there! If you’re in the middle of planning your Pittsburgh wedding, (or Disney for that matter!) you might have heard the term first look tossed around. If you’re still on the fence about whether or not it’s right for you, I’ve got you covered. As a wedding photographer here in Pittsburgh, PA I’ve seen how a first look can completely transform the wedding day experience—and not just for photos!

While the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony is still popular, (AND OF COURSE TOTALLY VALID) a first look offers plenty of awesome benefits that make it a great option for many couples. From a calmer, more intimate moment to better photos, here are five reasons you might want to consider a first look for your big day.

1. A Quiet, Intimate Moment Just for You Two

Your wedding day can be a whirlwind. Between getting ready, nerves, family, and the excitement of the ceremony, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed. A first look gives you a chance to step away from the chaos and enjoy a private moment with your partner. No distractions. Just the two of you, taking in the big day before it all really kicks off.

This is a chance to have a more personal and emotional moment, and honestly, as a photographer, it’s one of my favorite moments to capture. The raw emotions are always so genuine and beautiful, whether it’s happy tears, laughter, or just the pure joy of seeing each other for the first time.

2. More Time for Photos and Less Stress

A first look gives you the chance to get a good chunk of your photos done before the ceremony. Instead of feeling rushed to get through portraits after saying “I do,” you’ll have more time to enjoy your reception and spend time with guests.

This means no stressing about missing out on time with loved ones or feeling like you’re cutting it close on your wedding timeline. You can even explore some of Pittsburgh’s stunning locations—whether that’s the Duquesne Incline for some city views, or somewhere like Phipps Conservatory for those dreamy garden vibes. More time for photos = more time to capture beautiful memories without feeling rushed!

3. Take the Nerves Out of the Ceremony

Let’s be real: Weddings can make anyone nervous! The idea of walking down the aisle in front of all your family and friends, eyes on you, is enough to give anyone butterflies (or maybe even make your palms sweat).

Doing a first look before the ceremony helps take the edge off those pre-wedding jitters. You’ve already seen each other in private, and shared that emotional moment—so when you walk down the aisle, you can focus on the significance of the ceremony and enjoy the moment without all the nerves. It’s all about feeling calm and present, and a first look helps you do just that.

4. Choose the Perfect Lighting and Location

One of the best things about having a first look is that you get to choose when and where it happens. The timing of your first look is totally flexible, and you can pick the best location and lighting for photos.

Whether you want that soft, golden hour glow (which makes for some magical wedding photos), or you want to take advantage of Pittsburgh’s beautiful parks or city views, a first look gives you the freedom to find the best spot. You’ll be able to capture the beauty of the moment in the best light, without having to worry about fitting everything in right before or after the ceremony.

5. A More Relaxed Ceremony

By the time you reach your ceremony, a first look has already helped calm those pre-wedding nerves. You’ve had a moment to hug, laugh, maybe even share a few tears, and you’ve taken in the significance of the day together. So when it’s time to walk down the aisle, you can just focus on the vows, the ceremony, and the celebration with your guests.

Also, by having the first look early on, you’ve already captured those amazing photos that you’ll cherish for a lifetime—leaving the ceremony to flow more naturally and without all the pressure of trying to get that perfect photo during those first moments.

Choosing to do a first look is a personal decision, but for many couples, it’s a game-changer. It can create a more relaxed day, give you more time for photos, and offer you a private moment to share with your partner before everything gets going. Plus, as a photographer, I can tell you from experience that it makes for some seriously beautiful, emotional, and authentic photos!

If you’re considering a first look for your wedding in Pittsburgh or Disney (or just want to chat about the timeline and how it all works), I’d love to help you plan a day that captures all of your memories in the best possible way.
